Minor surgical procedures
Minor surgery is a simple, safe procedure used to treat specific health issues. It’s typically done on an outpatient basis. These procedures are less invasive and much gentler than major surgeries, often only needing local anesthesia or light sedation to keep you comfortable. There’s usually no need for full anesthesia, making the whole process easier and quicker to recover.
Common minor surgeries on human dental structures concern problems affecting the teeth, gums, or jaws. They are relatively fast and take a short time to complete in most cases and are performed to promote oral hygiene or correct particular dental conditions.
Minor surgical procedures in dentistry include
Tooth extractions
Wisdom teeth are eradicated routinely, other teeth have to be removed as well because of deterioration, overcrowding or injury. Surgically removing one of these is not an easy task it ranges from simple to a bit difficult due to the health condition of that particular tooth and its position.
Gum surgeries
Surgery is another way that may be used in the sense that some of the gum tissue has to be taken away, changed or added due to gum diseases or to improve the appearance of the gums. It can also be used to lengthen teeth o for either restorative or aesthetic purposes
Frenectomy
A frenectomy is surgery in which a small piece of tissue which restricts the mobility of the tongue or lips is removed. This procedure is often carried out in children or persons with ankyloglossia also known as tongue tie to improve speech or feeding problems.
Bone graft surgery
This is done when there is a need to reconstruct a portion of the jaw to support bone for functions of implant placement or because of periodontal disease.
Dental implant placements
This technique is carried out by placing a titanium screw that will act like the root of the tooth in the jaw area that has some gaps missing. It acts as an artificial tooth root through which it provides a strong support to a crown or a bridge.
Biopsies
A small biopsy is made, whereby a small tissue sample is removed, and then examined in a laboratory for the presence of oral cancer or any other diseases.
Extraction of Cyst or Abscess
This can be in the form of extraction of a cyst or abscess present in the bone of the lower jaw or the case of a tooth. They need to be removed surgically by a small surgical incision to prevent further infection of other teeth and the bones around them.
Flap Surgery
Flap surgery is used for treating severe forms of gum disease where the gum is cut and pulled back to clean the tooth roots and repair the bone. The gums are later moved, and therefore increase pocket size for the improvement of the overall oral health.
